ESWC Masters updates

As the days go by we get one step closer to this year’s ESWC Masters. The event will be an extra opportunity for teams to qualify for the grand finals in San Jose late August.

Fresh news regarding ESWC Masters has been announced. The event will as earlier mention, be a new addition to ESWC this year. Quite a few countries do not have their national qualification this year. Therefore ESWC Masters will be a opportunity for those teams that failed to qualify trough their national qualification or simply didn’t have any, to qualify for the grand finals.

The event will start off in a group stage with four groups with each five teams. Top two in each group will advance to the playoffs, being played single elimination and best of one map. This is a bit untraditional from the tournament-structure ESWC used earlier on (single elimination best of three). This means the teams advancing to the brackets will really have to play their a-game, if they want to play for one of three spots for ESWC grand finals.

The map pool this year will consist of five maps. Last year ESWC announced that the 2008 season would use de_tuscan as the fifth map in the pool. The map is mostly known from ESL EPS leagues, which especially favors the Germans on this map.

So far there are only listed eightteen participants for ESWC Masters on ESWC’s homepage, but a total of twenty teams should be attending the event. The eighteen participants signed up are:

roccat - contE, ruuit, naSu, tihOp & plastE

EM3 with $750.000, CS 1.6 and WoW

Electronic Sports League today announces its third edition of Extreme Masters. The third season will stretch across three continents during the season.

Extreme Masters must be counted as the eSports answer to Champinons League. The prestigious league will this season not only more than double their total prize purse, but also replace one game. Do not fear they would remove Counter-Strike 1.6, as it’s once again one of the two official games this season. As you might have guessed, Warcraft 3 gets removed due to it not having a big enough worldwide appeal. Replacing Warcraft 3 will be by World of Warcraft, ESL already had a few test events with the game, latest at DreamHack Winter 2007.

This season, Extreme Masters will consist of three continental leagues; Asia, America and Europe. The best teams and players from each continental league will advance to the global finals at CeBIT 2009 in Hannover, Germany. The season will kick off at Games Convention 2008 in Leipzig, Germany.
ESL states:
The third season of the Intel Extreme Masters unlocks a new level of eSports and entertainment. The Intel Extreme Masters Season III features events on three continents: Asia, America and Europe. The world's best eSport clans will be playing on highest performing Intel Extreme Processors on Alienware Systems from Dell's Gaming group competing for a prize money of 750,000USD. Counter-Strike 1.6 and World of Warcraft are the disciplines.

Last season we saw mousesports taking home the big check and the sparkling trophy. This season will without doubt once again be one of the most important tournaments for teams to win. We will be looking forward to season kickoff in August. HLTV.org will be your home for the entire Extreme Masters III season.

ROCCAT Competition winner

Time: 2008-06-19 17:56

Prior to DreamHack Summer HLTV.org in cooperation with ROCCAT launched a competition for you guys to win great prizes. All you had to do was guess the top3 in the WGT tournament, but not a single one hit the jackpot.

So who will be the lucky winner of the ROCCAT products? To make it fair for everyone who submitted their guess in time, we made a random draw with all participants. The draw was made with a random number in the range from 1 to 376, the nummer drawn would match one of the comments made in the newspost.

The lucky one is: #43

anssi from Finland had mTw to win, but in the end he got lucky enough to walk away with the jackpot as nobody else guessed the right top3.

anssi will be receiving following products from ROCCAT:
1 x BLOWJOB t-shirt
5 x ROCCAT Sense mousepads
5 x ROCCAT lanyards
I would like to congratulate anssi and thanks to all the participants for their attendance. Look out for more competitions during the summer.

Hello guys, I just wanted to tell you guys about our preparation and our expectations before we, tomorrow, go to Sweden.

We have been playing a lot lately, but of course we could have been playing a bit more, but the weather has been awesome, so it was absolutely pointless playing, and just lose the motivation slowly. We played as much as we felt was needed, and I believe I can say that we are ready for Monday.

Besides playing with the team, I’ve personally have been playing a lot of CB’s and public just to get my aim in shape. About the others, I’m sure they have been playing some public etc as well, and as I said before I feel we are ready for DreamHack.

Our expectations for DreamHack are simple; we expect at least top 3, and that is because of our latest result at Kode5, I do believe we are a Top3 team in the world, but I also know that it is really hard to win two tournaments in a row, because when you win a tournament people want to beat you.

I’ll try to blog from the event if it’s possible, take care you guys!!

mTw ftw!!!

Congrats Nemesis,Gotfragged Movie Challenge 08 Winner

A couple weeks ago, GotFrag decided to hold a video competition in which players were to submit short videos of "getting fragged". V.M.P's very own Nemesis submitted his entry, "Gotfragged: Indian Roflcopter". His video was consistently rated the most popular, and held the highest community rating for the majority of the competition. Exactly one hour ago, GotFrag released the results, with Nemesis' video taking first place, quoted by GotFrag, "this video has everything we could hope for in a GotFragged movie. A great sound track and some of the worst luck with nades in the history of Counter-Strike".

Nemesis will be receiving a SteelSeries 7G Keyboard for his 1st place finish. Congratulations Nemesis, and good job on an excellent representation of when good nades go bad :D

Lamborghini prices Gallardo LP560-4 for UK, New Pics Released | Hot*

Lamborghini just released pricing info on the new Gallardo LP560-4, at least for the UK. Not too thrilling to those of us on this side of the puddle maybe, but there was more to the release. Along with the price information, you see, Lamborghini released a bunch of new high-res pics of its refreshed supercar in action (previous pics were only studio shots). We have been smitten with the new Gallardo since seeing it in person at the Geneva Motor Show. It takes the basic Gallardo shape and adds just the right tweaks to make it instantly sharper and more modern, especially at the rear where the vertical tail has been lowered and widened to make the car look much more capable of tackling the twisties. And that isn't an optical illusion, either.

With its 50% new chassis, all-new suspension and engine, it should be a world-beater. Horsepower has jumped to 560 and its slightly lower weight means that the 0-100 km/h sprint is now just 3.7 seconds. Top speed has also crept up over 200 MPH for the first time, as well. If that sounds like your cup of tea, be prepared to shell out £147,330 ($288,943 USD) in the UK. It should start appearing in dealerships at the end of June. Check out the full press release after the jump and don't forget to click on the Gallery to see those new Pics ! There should be a new desktop wallpaper in there somewhere for you.

WCG 2008 Rules Released : Counter Strike 1.6

The rules for this year’s World Cyber Games have been released. They are extremely similar to last year’s rules; however there have been a few significant changes.

WCG have addressed the silent running debate and come out with their own rules on the matter. The first rule says that you can use the "Duck Move" as long as it is not bound to the mouse wheel. The second part of their move on the matter was to remove the rule relating to Duck Moving to allow the above change.

The second significant change is that only one coach will be permitted per team, and that only during freezetime will player coach interaction be allowed.

To summarise:

* Added Rule: ‘Duck’ cannot be specified up with Mouse Wheel.
* Added Rule: Only one coach will be permitted per team. Only during “Freezetime” coach and player interaction be allowed.
* Deleted Rule: Duck Moving !!
The ruleset can be found on the WCG website. The finals take place in November of this year in Cologne, Germany.

Screenshots and a tour of the new Apple TV

The Apple TV update announced last month at Macworld has finally been released to the public and I finished downloading it a couple hours ago. I ran through the options and took a few photos of the new and notable sections, which I'll describe after the jump.

Overall it feels like every inch of the software has been updated. Instead of an empty box that plays music and movies from another computer, it's definitely starting to feel like a standalone settop box capable of quite a bit on its own. Here are a few shots of areas I hadn't seen mentioned or explored in the Macworld previews:

Flickr in the Photos section:

The Flickr feature allows you to navigate a single user's recent photos, favorites, and photo sets, but it doesn't use the Flickr API to log you fully into the service. Without the API, you won't be able to view private photos or view photos from your contacts/friends and there doesn't seem to be a way to even follow RSS feeds of photos from Flickr. Still, it's a nice way to view photos if you're a user of Flickr and have friends on the service.

HD Movie Rentals
To test out the movie rental feature, I rented a few HD movies to check download speeds and download priorities. Two things jumped out at me: one is download speed and the other is the lack of simultaneous downloads.

Even on my top speed Verizon FiOS 30Mbit line downloads were quite sluggish. Judging from the first hour of downloading, HD movies will take several hours (about 6-8 hours is my guess) to download in full even over broadband. This may be slow servers on Apple's end of things due to the new feature coming out and causing some slowdowns thanks to demand because my connection can normally download a 2-3Gb file in less than an hour. On the positive side, the HD rentals being downloaded had enough video downloaded in about 15-20 minutes to begin real-time playback of movies, but I didn't try it out with a movie to see if the download rate kept up with the viewing time.
I quickly noticed that only one movie could be downloaded at a time, and the one that took priority was the most recently purchased one. Even on the Downloads page under Settings, I could not change the order if I wanted my first purchase to complete before my 2nd or 3rd. I was happy to see that while movies were being downloaded my connection wasn't being saturated and I could browse and use the web normally on other networked computers.

I'm pretty impressed with the wide array of choices in the Podcast view and how easy it is to browse -- there are popular shows, HD video, animation, and other interesting genres shown front and center. Looking at the vast array of podcast choices (I looked up a dozen of my favorites and found a dozen more I'd never heard of that looked good), this was the first time I kind of realized that podcasting could become the new Cable TV, offering thousands of options for anyone looking to learn something or be entertained (and it was all free!). I noticed a lot of larger podcast/tv/studio networks get their own option and major players like HBO seem to be copying their video on demand content into the video podcast format.

Something I hadn't seen mentioned in the Apple TV previews was that aside from buying and renting movies, you can buy pretty much everything else on the iTunes Music Store. You can buy albums and whole seasons of TV Shows in addition to the movie stuff. I didn't notice any way to buy just a song or a single episode of anything. Also, once you store your iTunes Music Store password, you can save it and make purchasing new items a one-click process.

Air Tunes

It was a nice surprise to see AirTunes in the new version of Apple TV. I had no idea they were adding this capability and though it seemed a little weird at first (can't you just stream music from your Apple TV to your computer instead of the other way around?) I realized this could be a cool feature if a friend comes over with a laptop and just wants to stream music quickly and easily. Also, another cool feature is that the Apple remote is functional and actually pauses and advances music on your connected iTunes computer remotely from your couch.

Conclusions:
Overall in the short time I've been able to play with Apple TV 2.0, I've seen a lot to like and the biggest change is definitely the feeling that this is now a standalone device that I can use to browse photos and look for podcasts and it's not simply a container for my downloaded music and movies like it was before. As predicted, the Apple TV device did suddenly become a Pay Per View box in that most of the menu options are geared towards browsing, buying, and downloading other content, with just a tiny option at the bottom to look at your stuff. Most of the menus are definitely geared towards other new stuff. It'll be interesting to see how Apple TV evolves when the next update comes along.
